Whoa, this week just went zooming past. So very strange, because I feel like last weekend was ages ago, and yet I can't quite get my head around the fact that it's already Friday. Again.
So. Updates, yes?
Saturday: Elf Fantasy Fair. Hee hee. Largest Fantasy Fair (Ren Fair) in Europe! Koos, Jan, Alessandra, Cindy and I all went together (only Koos and I dressed up) and wandered the grounds of the BEAUTIFUL castle all day. You have to love Fantasy Fairs, with their array of strange and wonderful people selling and buying strange and wonderful things. A good time was had by all browsing the stands, people/fairy/elf/witch/etc. watching, listening to music, and (mostly) drinking tea and eating biscuits (by which I mean cookies) at the Middle Eastern tea shop. I had a blast, and even had my picture taken a few times! (I was dressed as a belly dancer.) We had quite an adventure getting there and getting back, but we managed. :-)
Sunday: It rained and was generally cold and miserable. Koos went off geocaching (biked 80km too!) For me this was a perfect combination: cold miserable weather, and being alone. I spent the entire day translating and managed to finish the Westcar Papyrus. Whoo!
Monday: Met up with Jennifer for brunch at Bagels and Beans. As usual, we chatted about everything that has to do with life being complicated and amazing in your 20s. I just adore Jen, and wish I could keep her and her family around me for a long time. Ah well, perhaps one day.... Afterwards, I went to de Slegte, the cheap book store here, and picked up a few more books about Muhammad (peace be upon him) and a few about the Buddha. I got to class at 2:30 only to remember that I have class from 1-3 on Mondays, not 3-5. So I was only in class for 30 min, but apparently I had translated more of the papyrus than anyone else, so I read the entire time. And did well, so it was fun! :-)
Tuesday: This day didn't really exist for me. I was sick. All day. I woke up at 10 with a horrible headache, tried to function, but went back to bed at noon. Woke up at 2, with the same headache, and decided to just give up. So I got some sinus meds from Koos, and crashed until about 6pm. During the few hours of being awake, I read American Gods. So much for Tuesday.
Wednesday: Mostly on this day I read various things. American Gods, my Muhammad (peace be upon him) book, my Buddha book. Good times in the sun. :-)
Thursday: Queen's Day. The biggest Dutch national holiday. Sadly and tragically brought to a rather disappointing end when a desperate man who had just lost his job and his home drove his car into the crowds watching the royal family. He had been aiming at the bus carrying the royals, but his car was so damaged by plowing through the barricades, that he couldn't see. Six people and the driver were killed.
I didn't really get a chance to see much of Queen's Day anyway, though. I had to be near a computer to chat with my mom about an urgent financial problem (though turns out she was sick and never made it to the computer) so I sat outside in the sun and read American Gods. I can't really complain, because it was a pretty great time, but I would have liked to see the open markets and the orange and the drunk people. Oh well.
Around 4pm, when I realized mom wasn't coming online, I went to Oestgeest to watch Koos play cricket. It turned out to be quite an amazing evening. The games lasted until almost 7pm, and then there was a barbeque at the club house. I met some amazingly intersting people. Liz (England) and her husband, Joost (Holland), Candace (South Africa) and her son, a couple of other South Africans, a whole family of awesome Dutch folks. It was something of a family event, so there were people from 5 to 50 there. I think it was much better way of spending sucha holiday than getting drunk in the streets of Amsterdam!
Friday (today): Today was another nice sunny day, so Koos and I went for a walk. We had planned to go to the lake nearby, but got distracted by the baby loons and their parents. It was an ideal little spot too. A tiny bridge, pink flowers floating on the canal under us, sunlight in our faces, and tiny, uuuuugleeee little pitiful baby birds squeaking and getting fed by their parents. Awesome.
I also emailed UT Austin about their dual language Germanic Studies masters program. It sounds SO cool: comparing German and Dutch linguistics, literature, culture, whatever I want! The deadline was in January, but Jen told me that she got in to her grad program by applying late (deadline in Sept. she applied in April and still got in!) so I mailed them. Within the hour they responded that my background sounded interesting and that they would be happy to assess my application for the Fall semester!! Whoo hoo!! Not sure yet how long the program might last, but this is still great news.
Went to Game Night and worked on my CELTA application while everyone played. Good times, good times. I shall mail it in tomorrow!
Dear Universe,
Thank you for everything you have bestowed upon me. I'm the luckiest girl in you. I'm putting you in charge of tying up all these little loose ends in my life, and I have faith that the outcome will be something pretty amazing! May all beings find peace and happiness. May all beings be free from illusions and suffering. May all beings be as blessed as I have been. :-)
